In 2024, during a conference organized by the Mennonite Central Committee, a powerful message echoed through the room—one that placed families at the center of national development and community resilience.
Taking the stage was Rosa Broadhead, a volunteer with Hands of Mercy International. With clarity and conviction, she spoke about an issue often discussed, but not always prioritized: the strength of families as the foundation of thriving societies.
Her message was both simple and profound, when families are strong, communities are stable, and nations are more resilient.
Drawing from her experience in humanitarian work, Rosa highlighted how many of the challenges communities face—poverty, inequality, displacement, and social fragmentation—are deeply connected to the well-being of families. She emphasized that interventions cannot succeed in isolation; they must consider the family unit as a critical entry point for sustainable impact.
Throughout her address, Rosa underscored the importance of investing in systems that support families—access to healthcare, education, economic opportunities, and social protection. She also reflected on the role of community-based approaches, where local voices and lived experiences guide solutions.
As a Hands of Mercy International volunteer, her perspective carried the weight of real-world engagement. She spoke not from theory, but from the field—where she has witnessed both the vulnerabilities families face and the incredible resilience they demonstrate when supported effectively.
What made her speech particularly compelling was the call to action directed at policymakers, development practitioners, and communities alike:
to move beyond short-term solutions and commit to long-term strategies that strengthen families as the backbone of development.
The conference itself brought together diverse actors—faith-based organizations, humanitarian agencies, and community leaders—united by a shared goal of building more inclusive and compassionate societies. Rosa’s contribution stood out as a reminder that impactful change begins at the most fundamental level: the family.
