Technology as a Catalyst for Women’s Economic Empowerment

In May 2023, a diverse group of partners came together to advance a shared goal: strengthening women’s economic empowerment through technology. The event, held under the theme “Technology to Enhance Women’s Economic Empowerment,” was jointly organized by UN Women, ActionAid, the Ministry of Labor and Skills, and Hands of Mercy International.

The gathering brought together policymakers, development practitioners, civil society organizations, and community representatives to explore how digital tools and innovation can expand opportunities for women—particularly those in underserved and rural communities.

At the center of the discussion was a clear message: while technology holds immense potential, access remains uneven. Speakers highlighted that many women still face barriers such as limited digital literacy, restricted access to devices, and structural inequalities that prevent them from fully participating in the digital economy.

A keynote speaker from Hands of Mercy International emphasized the importance of bridging this gap by investing not only in tools, but also in skills, access, and supportive ecosystems. She noted that when women are equipped with the right digital capabilities—whether through mobile platforms, digital finance, or online entrepreneurship—they are better positioned to generate income, support their families, and contribute to local economies.

Throughout the sessions, participants shared practical examples of impact, including digital savings groups, mobile-based training programs, and small business initiatives powered by technology. The discussions also stressed the importance of partnerships between governments, NGOs, and the private sector to scale these solutions sustainably.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all partners to continue investing in inclusive digital solutions that place women at the center. By aligning policy, technology, and community engagement, the initiative reinforced a simple but powerful idea: empowering women economically is not only a matter of equity—it is essential for sustainable development.
