“Crisis of Justice” as Floods Devastate Pakistan

Islamabad, Pakistan – As Pakistan grapples with one of the most devastating floods in decades—leaving over 1,000 people dead and more than two million displaced—the country’s climate change minister has described the situation as a “crisis of justice.”

According to the United Nations, more than six million people have been affected following intense cloudbursts and an unusually heavy monsoon season. The resulting floods and landslides have caused widespread destruction, damaging over 12,500 homes, killing 6,500 livestock, and devastating crops across the country. For a nation where nearly half the population depends on agriculture, the impact has been severe and far-reaching.

Despite contributing less than one percent of global carbon emissions, Pakistan ranks among the top 10 most climate-vulnerable countries. Rising global temperatures have accelerated the melting of the country’s approximately 13,000 glaciers, threatening river systems, irrigation networks, and the agricultural backbone that sustains millions of livelihoods.

The consequences extend beyond immediate loss of life. Communities face disrupted education, limited access to healthcare and safe drinking water, and increased risks of waterborne diseases, particularly affecting children. Years of cultural heritage—including places of worship, schools, and historic structures—have also been lost to repeated flooding events.

Environmental challenges further compound the crisis. Air pollution has worsened, with smog replacing seasonal fog in major cities. Water sources, once considered safe, are now heavily contaminated, while growing landfills contribute to environmental degradation and rising temperatures—intensifying the cycle of climate instability.

In response to these challenges, Hands of Mercy International is working closely with affected farming communities to provide critical support. The organization is helping farmers recover from crop losses by supplying agricultural inputs, offering livelihood support, and promoting climate-resilient farming practices. By strengthening community resilience, Hands of Mercy International aims to ensure that vulnerable households can rebuild their livelihoods and adapt to the increasing unpredictability of climate-related disasters.
