Supporting Vulnerable Women Through Economic Empowerment

At a regional development forum, Sister Louise Mello, Director of Advocacy at Hands of Mercy International, addressed policymakers and partners on the urgent need to strengthen economic opportunities for vulnerable women.

Speaking during a panel on inclusive development, Sister Louise emphasized that economic vulnerability remains one of the biggest barriers facing women in underserved communities. She highlighted that limited access to income, financial services, and skills development continues to expose women to cycles of poverty and dependency.

Drawing from Hands of Mercy International’s field experience across Africa and other regions, she noted that practical interventions—such as community savings groups, vocational training, and small business support—have proven effective in helping women build sustainable livelihoods. She also pointed to the importance of linking economic empowerment with access to healthcare, education, and social protection systems.

“Economic empowerment is not just about income,” she stated. “It is about dignity, decision-making power, and the ability for women to support their families and contribute meaningfully to their communities.”

Sister Louise further called for stronger collaboration between governments, development partners, and local organizations to scale solutions that are already working at the community level. She emphasized that policies must be informed by real experiences on the ground to ensure that interventions are both relevant and sustainable.

Her remarks come at a time when many regions are facing increased economic pressures, disproportionately affecting women and children. Stakeholders at the forum acknowledged the need to prioritize women’s economic resilience as a key driver of broader social and economic development.

The discussion is expected to inform ongoing efforts to expand programs that support women’s financial independence and long-term stability.
