In Peru, a collaborative effort brought together UNV, UNICEF, IOM, and Hands of Mercy International to advance a community-driven response to development challenges along the country’s northern border. At the heart of this initiative were Hands of Mercy International Volunteers, who played a key role in connecting global frameworks with local realities.
The mission focused on identifying and engaging highly motivated professionals from within the communities—individuals whose lived experiences and local knowledge are essential for effective humanitarian action. Through this partnership, volunteers helped facilitate outreach, coordination, and engagement with local stakeholders, ensuring that the process was both inclusive and impactful.
With the support of local implementing partners, five information sessions were successfully conducted in Piura and Tumbes, reaching a total of 642 professionals across diverse fields. Hands of Mercy International Volunteers actively supported these sessions—guiding participants, sharing insights, and helping them navigate the process of joining the UN Volunteers talent pool.
The impact extended beyond information sharing. By working closely with professional associations, universities, and local government institutions, the initiative created pathways for skilled individuals to contribute meaningfully to their own communities. As highlighted by José Vásquez Heredia of UNICEF Peru, such efforts empower professionals outside capital cities to give back through dignified and impactful work.
