Hands of Mercy International Responds to Growing Humanitarian Needs

The worsening humanitarian situation in Niger, driven by insecurity, climate shocks, and widespread displacement, has triggered a critical emergency affecting thousands of vulnerable families. Increasing violence, coupled with food insecurity and limited access to essential services, has placed immense strain on already fragile communities and public systems. In response to this rapidly deteriorating context, Hands of Mercy International (HoM) is mobilizing its emergency response capacity to deliver immediate, life-saving assistance to populations affected by displacement, instability, and disrupted livelihoods.

As the situation continues to evolve, HoM is conducting rapid needs assessments across affected regions while preparing to scale up targeted interventions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and vulnerable host communities. Particular attention is being given to areas heavily impacted by insecurity and climate-related shocks, where access to food, water, healthcare, and protection services remains severely limited.

Building on its growing presence in the region and strong collaboration with local partners, Hands of Mercy International is expanding its emergency operations in accessible areas where needs are most urgent. The initial response prioritizes critical support for displaced populations in both temporary shelters and host communities. Planned interventions include the provision of protection services and psychosocial support, Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), mobile health services, and the distribution of essential relief items such as hygiene kits, dignity kits, and infant care supplies.

HoM’s response is guided by an integrated, multisectoral approach aligned with the humanitarian-development-peace (HDP) nexus. This framework ensures that while immediate humanitarian needs are addressed, efforts are also directed toward strengthening community resilience and supporting long-term recovery. Niger continues to face overlapping crises—including insecurity, poverty, and the impacts of climate change—which have significantly weakened public services and increased vulnerability among both local populations and displaced communities.

Hands of Mercy International has been actively working with vulnerable communities, focusing on protection, health, and livelihoods support. Its interventions emphasize inclusive and community-driven approaches, ensuring that women, children, and other at-risk groups receive the support they need. However, due to the intensifying crisis, ongoing development activities are being adapted or temporarily scaled down to prioritize emergency life-saving interventions.

Despite the challenging operating environment, HoM remains well-positioned to respond effectively. With dedicated national teams, trusted community networks, and strong local partnerships, the organization has the capacity to conduct rapid emergency assessments within 24–48 hours and deploy timely assistance where it is needed most.

Hands of Mercy International continues to call on partners, donors, and stakeholders to support the scaling up of humanitarian efforts in Niger. Strengthened collaboration will be essential to reach more affected populations, alleviate suffering, and support communities in rebuilding their lives with dignity and resilience.
