James Rubiro served as an Engineer with Hands of Mercy International, contributing to infrastructure development and facility expansion to strengthen healthcare service delivery in Nzara, South Sudan.

James is an experienced civil engineer and an Aurora Fellow, originally from Enfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Columbia University through its combined civil engineering program, building a strong foundation in engineering design and construction.

Prior to his engagement with Hands of Mercy International, James participated in international service initiatives, including supporting the construction of a footbridge in Nicaragua with Bridges to Prosperity—an experience that deepened his commitment to using engineering for community impact.

During his placement in Nzara, he:

  • Played a key role in the expansion and improvement of healthcare facilities, enhancing infrastructure to better serve local communities 
  • Supported engineering planning and on-site construction activities, ensuring practical and sustainable solutions 
  • Contributed to strengthening the operational capacity of healthcare services through improved physical infrastructure 

James’ continued commitment to service, alongside his family, reflects a deep dedication to long-term community impact. His work significantly advanced Hands of Mercy International’s mission to improve access to quality healthcare through sustainable infrastructure development in underserved regions.
