Rebecca Swords has been serving as a dedicated volunteer with Hands of Mercy International in New Delhi, India, supporting the Street Children Programme focused on improving the wellbeing of children living in slum communities and street-connected environments.

Through her work, Rebecca has been actively involved in engaging with children in shelter homes and non-formal education centres across New Delhi. Her role centers on providing not only educational support but also emotional care and a sense of belonging to children facing challenging living conditions.

Reflecting on her experience, Rebecca shares:

“Volunteering with the Street Children Programme has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. Working with children in shelter homes and slum communities in New Delhi has shown me the power of simple acts—spending time, listening, and showing care.

The children are incredibly resilient and always eager to learn and connect. Whether through informal classes, creative activities like music and arts, or simply playing games together, every interaction brings joy and growth—both for them and for me.

What stands out most is how much these children value connection. They welcome volunteers with open hearts, and being part of their journey—helping build confidence, creativity, and a sense of belonging—is truly rewarding.

This experience has deepened my understanding of community, compassion, and the importance of creating safe and supportive spaces for children to thrive.”

During her service, Rebecca has:
