Hands of Mercy International has launched a comprehensive Community Health Improvement Program in Babati Town Council, a predominantly rural area with an estimated population of 130,000 people across 33,600 households.

The initiative is built on a simple but powerful principle: when families have accurate health information, entire communities become healthier.

Under the program, each household selected one representative to participate in 32 contact hours of structured public health education. The curriculum covers critical topics including:

  • Nutrition and food safety
  • Safe water, sanitation, and hygiene
  • Menstrual health management
  • Reproductive health and family planning
  • Sexually transmitted infections, including HIV
  • Healthy pregnancy and safe motherhood
  • Childhood immunization and disease prevention

Community Health Workers at the Center

The program is delivered by 35 trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) who completed an intensive, HoM-led capacity-building course. Equipped with participatory teaching skills, they use videos, PowerPoint presentations, and facilitated discussions to ensure complex health topics are clearly understood and culturally relevant.

Training is being rolled out systematically and is expected to reach all 33,600 households by October 2025. Attendance has been exceptional, with over 99% participation from household representatives—demonstrating strong community ownership and trust in the program.

Knowledge That Reaches Every Home

To extend learning beyond the classroom, each household receives a 42-page illustrated health education booklet, developed specifically by Hands of Mercy International for this initiative. Household representatives use the booklet to share key messages with spouses, children, and extended family members, ensuring knowledge spreads throughout the community.

Measuring Impact for Lasting Change

Hands of Mercy International places strong emphasis on evidence-based programming. Pre- and post-training surveys are conducted with participants and at the broader community level to measure knowledge gains and shifts in attitudes and practices.

In addition, routine health data from Babati Town Council will be reviewed to assess longer-term impact on key indicators, including:

  • Infant and maternal mortality
  • HIV and STI prevalence
  • Underage and unplanned pregnancies
  • Immunization coverage and child health outcomes

Building Healthier Communities from Within

By empowering local health workers and households with practical knowledge, Hands of Mercy International is strengthening community resilience and laying the foundation for sustainable health improvements. The Babati Community Health Improvement Program demonstrates how education, when placed in the hands of communities themselves, can drive meaningful and measurable change.
