In the quiet village of Bhavanipur in northern India, pregnancy had long been a journey filled with fear rather than hope. Limited access to skilled health workers, long distances to clinics, and deeply rooted myths around maternal care meant that many women gave birth at home without professional support. For years, maternal and newborn complications were seen as inevitable.

That reality began to change when Hands of Mercy International launched its Safe Motherhood Initiative, a project designed to ensure that no woman would have to risk her life to give life.

Meena’s Story: From Fear to Confidence

Meena Devi, a 26-year-old mother of two, was pregnant for the third time. Her previous births had been difficult, both conducted at home with only her mother-in-law present.

“I was always afraid,” Meena recalls. “I thought pain and danger were part of being a mother.”

Through the HoM project, Meena was identified early by a trained community health facilitator, Anjali Singh, who visited her home. Anjali enrolled Meena in antenatal care, explained the importance of nutrition, danger signs during pregnancy, and helped her plan for a facility-based delivery.

For the first time, Meena attended all her antenatal checkups. She received iron and folic acid supplements, nutrition counseling, and emotional support.

When labor began, Anjali accompanied Meena to the nearest health center—transport costs covered through the HoM emergency referral fund. Meena delivered a healthy baby girl under skilled care.

“I felt safe. I felt respected,” Meena says with a smile. “Now I tell other women that childbirth does not have to be frightening.”

Anjali’s Story: A Community Transformed from Within

Before the project, Anjali Singh was a volunteer with little formal training and limited confidence. HoM provided her with intensive capacity-building on maternal health, newborn care, and community engagement.

“I used to doubt myself,” Anjali admits. “Now women trust me. Families listen.”

Today, Anjali supports more than 120 pregnant women across neighboring villages. She tracks pregnancies, encourages early antenatal visits, and works closely with local clinics to ensure continuity of care. Her role has elevated her status in the community and strengthened the bridge between families and the health system.

Lasting Impact Beyond Numbers

Through the Hands of Mercy International Safe Motherhood Initiative, the project achieved:

  • Increased antenatal care attendance among pregnant women
  • Higher rates of skilled birth deliveries
  • Improved maternal nutrition and birth preparedness
  • Strengthened community trust in formal health services
  • Empowered local women as health champions

Most importantly, it replaced fear with knowledge and isolation with support.

Hope That Multiplies

As Meena cradles her newborn, she speaks not just as a beneficiary, but as an advocate.

“My daughter will grow up knowing that her life matters,” she says. “Because someone believed in mothers like me.”

Through compassion, community partnership, and practical care, Hands of Mercy International continues to ensure that in villages like Bhavanipur, motherhood is no longer a risk—but a promise of life, dignity, and hope.
