How Hands of Mercy International and Global Partnerships Are Empowering Youth Through Vocational Training

Across the world, millions of young people have the ambition, creativity, and determination to build better lives for themselves and their communities. Yet, many face barriers to employment, including limited access to practical training, inadequate learning facilities, and a lack of resources to turn their potential into opportunity.

For young people in underserved communities, these barriers can be even greater. Talented and motivated youth may live far from established training institutions or belong to community-based organizations that lack the infrastructure and resources needed to provide quality vocational education.

At Hands of Mercy International (HoM), we believe that a young person’s future should not be determined by their background, the size of their organization, or the resources available in their community. Through partnerships with governments, local organizations, training institutions, and community leaders, we seek to help close the skills gap and expand access to vocational training that leads to meaningful opportunities.

Bridging the Skills Gap Through Practical Training

As economies evolve and industries become increasingly specialized, employers need people who can apply their knowledge in practical settings. While academic education remains essential, vocational training offers an important complementary pathway, equipping young people with the technical and professional skills needed to participate in the workforce.

From electrical installation and construction to hospitality, culinary arts, business management, and other technical trades, vocational education can help young people develop capabilities that are relevant to their local economies.

Practical training allows students to learn by doing. In well-equipped workshops, they can work with tools, machinery, electrical systems, construction materials, and other equipment while developing the confidence and experience required for real working environments.

Ensuring Smaller Youth Organizations Are Not Left Behind

Some of the most promising ideas emerge from young people and grassroots groups working directly within their communities. These groups may be newly established, informally organized, or still developing the governance and administrative systems needed to become larger institutions.

Their limited organizational capacity does not necessarily mean they lack commitment, knowledge, or the ability to make a difference.

Hands of Mercy International supports an approach in which opportunities are made more accessible to such groups, while recognizing the importance of responsible financial management, safeguarding, transparency, and accountability.

Through partnerships with more established institutions, mentorship, technical assistance, and appropriate support arrangements, smaller organizations can strengthen their capacity and participate in initiatives that might otherwise remain beyond their reach.

Where permitted by funders and applicable regulations, community groups that are not yet formally registered can also be engaged through suitable partnership arrangements with eligible organizations.

This approach creates space for young people to contribute ideas, participate in decision-making, develop leadership skills, and help shape solutions to challenges affecting their communities.

It also recognizes that development is not something that should happen to young people. They should be active participants in designing, implementing, and sustaining the initiatives intended to benefit them.

Ubuntu: Leaving No One Behind

At the heart of this approach is the spirit of Ubuntu—the understanding that our humanity is interconnected and that communities thrive when people support one another.

Ubuntu reminds us that individual progress is strengthened by collective well-being. A young person who gains a technical skill can support their family, provide services to neighbours, create employment, and contribute to the wider community. A small organization that receives appropriate support can become a platform for opportunity for many others.

When governments, international partners, local institutions, and grassroots groups work together, they can create pathways for young people who might otherwise be excluded.

Leaving no one behind means looking beyond the most visible institutions and asking who still lacks access to opportunity. It means recognizing the potential of young people in remote communities, those from disadvantaged backgrounds, and those whose organizations are still growing.

It also means ensuring that support is accompanied by the systems needed to protect participants, use resources responsibly, and deliver lasting results.
